I’ve just finished watching a Japanese anime 5 Centimetes Per Second. It is a chain of short (love) stories about distance. I was totally moved by the story and how it was told. I will write about it briefly, trying not to spoil it for anyone who might want to see it. The name of the anime comes from the fact(?) that 5 cm/s is the speed at which cherry blossom petals fall. According to Wikipedia (don’t go there unless you want to spoil the movie), the petals falling is a metaphorical representation of humans, how slow the life progress, and how people slowly drift apart…
The anime is divided into three chapters, each for a stage in the characters’ life. The anime starts off with a boy and a girl giving a promise that they will watch cherry blossom together every year. Obviously, as time goes by, they start to drift apart. The story progresses through narration through the three main characters. I’m not going to say any more as I do not want to spoil it for you. The story is very sweet, and it IS really a must see.
It somehow pulls me back to reality…
In addition to the very beautiful story, the quality of the artworks was unmatchable. The anime is relatively new. It was premiered in Japan only a couple of months ago. The DVD will be available in the U.S. in December this year. In the meanwhile, you can watch it at youtube. I know I will most likely get the DVD when it comes…
